Festival 1001 delicija 2008.

SPLIT, PROKURATIVE 30 and 31 of May 2008.

The 4th Festival “Gloria 1001 Delicija” (1001 delicacies) took place in Split, on the Prokurative Square, on May, 30-31, 2008, and has turned the City of Diocletian into the Mediterranean gastronomic capital.

It started the day before the official inauguration of the festival, with a delightful dinner on the marvellous terrace of Hotel Park, prepared by chefs from Croatia, Italy, France and Slovenia. Six courses, six excellent wines, accompanied by candlelight, the parfume of yellow broom, and the music performed by the “Prijatelji šansone”.

It was the prelude to the event which has gathered, the day after, on the Prokurative Square, 60 small producers from all over Croatia, with their top quality products: cheese, olive oils, ham, truffles, wines… The "best among the best" have presented their specialties to the visitors: “rapska torta” (the traditional cake from the island of Rab and “Dioklecijanov vijenac” (Crown of Diocletian - sweet from the region of Dalmatia), the jam made out of bitter oranges of the Dubrovnik region and the autochtonous olive oils, “kulen” (traditional spicy sausage) from the Slavonia region and the cheese from the island of Pag, “bermet” and “orahovica” (walnut liqueur)… and many other delicacies.

Meanwhile, in the big tent equipped by the Professional Electrolux kitchen facilities, top chefs from 6 different countries have been preparing all day long their specialties in front of the audience. This year's theme was: mediterranean cuisine.

The Festival „Gloria 1001 delicija“ has been inaugurated by the mayor of Split, Mr. Ivan Kuret, and the guest of honour was Mr. Bruno Giraud-Héraud, president of the „Conservatoire International des Cuisines Méditerranéennes“ (International Conservatoire of Mediterranean Cuisines), accompanied by foreign journalists. Together thay have been participating in all the events taking place on the Prokurative Square.

The festival has given place to the inauguration of Oliva allegra, also attended by the Croatian minister of science, education and sports, prof. Dragan Primorac. Oliva allegra is the first private School for gastronomic arts in Split, and it will open its doors to future chefs in autumn.

Around 2000 visitors, among those many foreign tourists, have been enjoying for 2 days in this unique gastronomic event, by participating in specialized workshops and wine tastings presented by experts from the “Sommelier Club Croatia”. The most attended, and, for sure, the noisyest workshop was “Children and Food”, where kids could prepare their favourite dishes, with the help of a talented young nutricionist Dragana Olujić, who taught them how to recognize high quality and healthy food. Following the same theme, “Children and Food”, a photo exhibiton has been inaugurated in the Fotoklub Split, attended by more than 500 visitors on the day of the inaguration.

The Festival was organized by “1001 Delicija“ and the magazine „Gloria”, the most popular weekly magazine of the “EPH” (Europa Press Holding) group.
